The Swing is an American Rhythm dance and is therefore classified as a spot dance, meaning it is danced primarily in one area of the floor rather than progressing around the room. Known for its energetic character and playful interaction between partners, Swing is often referred to as the party dance because the relationship between the partners is centered more around fun and excitement than romance. Ballroom Swing developed in the United States during the 1930s and 1940s, growing out of the swing music era and earlier forms of Lindy Hop and Jitterbug.
