Ballroom Dance Lessons at R&J Ballroom in Canton Ohio

Beginner-Friendly Dance Lessons for Adults

Starting dance lessons can feel intimidating at first, especially for adults who have never danced before. That’s why we focus heavily on creating an atmosphere that feels encouraging, relaxed, and easy to step into.

Most of our students begin with little or no dance experience. Some come in preparing for a wedding, some are looking for a fun social hobby, and others simply want to try something new. Wherever you're starting from, our instructors work at your pace and help make the learning process comfortable and enjoyable.

You do not need a partner to get started, and you do not need to “have rhythm” before walking through the door.

Private Ballroom Dance Lessons

Private lessons are the fastest and most personalized way to learn ballroom dancing. During private lessons, your instructor focuses specifically on your goals, experience level, and learning style.

Some students want to prepare for a wedding or special event, while others want to build confidence socially or improve their technique over time. Private lessons allow us to customize the experience to fit exactly what you’re looking for.

We offer flexible scheduling options and work with beginners through advanced dancers.

If you’re brand new to dancing, our complimentary introductory session is the perfect way to get started and experience the studio for yourself.

Group Dance Classes

Group classes are a fun, affordable way to learn new dances while meeting other people and building confidence on the dance floor.

Our classes are designed to be welcoming for beginners while still helping more experienced students continue improving. We rotate through a variety of ballroom, Latin, swing, and social dance styles throughout the year, helping students become comfortable in many different types of dancing.

Group classes also pair perfectly with private lessons by giving students additional practice time and repetition in a social environment.

Wedding Dance Lessons

Wedding dance lessons are one of the most popular reasons students begin dancing with us.

We work with couples preparing for their first dance, as well as father-daughter dances, mother-son dances, anniversary dances, and other special moments. Whether you want something simple and comfortable or fully choreographed, we help make the process enjoyable and stress-free.

Many couples start with no prior dance experience at all. Our instructors help break everything down step-by-step so you can feel confident and comfortable on your wedding day.

Ballroom, Latin, and Social Dance Styles

At R&J Ballroom, we teach a wide variety of partner dances for both social and performance settings.

Some of the most popular dances we teach include:

  • Waltz
  • Tango
  • Foxtrot
  • Cha Cha
  • Rumba
  • East Coast Swing
  • Salsa
  • West Coast Swing
  • Hustle
  • Night Club Two-Step

Whether you’re looking to dance socially, prepare for an event, or simply explore a new hobby, we can help you find the dances that fit your goals and interests.

Why Students Choose R&J Ballroom

Our goal is to make dancing approachable, structured, and genuinely enjoyable for adults of all experience levels.

Students choose R&J Ballroom because of our welcoming atmosphere, personalized instruction, supportive community, and clear learning structure. We believe ballroom dance lessons should feel encouraging rather than intimidating, especially for beginners.

Jonathan and Rachel Green have spent years teaching students throughout the United States and have earned national and world ballroom dance titles both personally and with their students. Today, they continue to focus on building a positive and beginner-friendly dance community right here in Canton, Ohio.

Whether your goal is confidence, social dancing, weddings, fitness, competition, or simply trying something new, we’re here to help you enjoy the process.

Social Dancing and Community

Learning to dance is about more than just steps. Many students come to R&J Ballroom because they’re looking for a fun activity, a supportive community, or new social experiences.

Throughout the year, we host dance socials, themed parties, workshops, game nights, and community events that give students opportunities to practice, meet people, and enjoy dancing outside of lessons.

For many students, the friendships and community become just as meaningful as the dancing itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@startdancing.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.

No. Many of our students attend lessons individually, and no partner is required to begin learning.

Absolutely. Most of our students start with little or no prior dance experience.

Most people simply come in wearing whatever they had on that day. Comfortable clothing you can move in is perfectly fine.

For shoes, avoid anything with too much grip since dancing involves turning and pivoting. Smooth-soled shoes usually work best.

Most students begin feeling more comfortable within just a few lessons. Like any skill, improvement continues over time, but beginners are often surprised by how quickly they can start dancing.

Yes. We regularly help couples prepare for first dances, parent dances, and other special wedding moments.

We teach a variety of partner dancing: Ballroom & Latin, West Coast Swing & Hustle, Rhythm & Smooth, Country Western, Salsa & Bachata and many other social dances for adults and couples.

Learn about the ballroom dances

Did you know?

Ballroom dancing can be split into five different categories.

American Rhythm, American Smooth, International Latin, International Standard and Club.

Each of these categories has their own unique grouping of dances.

American Smooth and International Standard have similar characteristics and tempos which will cause the two styles to look like one another. They even have some of the same dances, however the tempos of those dances are different from one another. International Standard is unique in that the couples will never break frame, which refers to keeping both arms connected to one another. Whereas American Smooth allows for dancers to break apart from one another. Some would say this makes American Smooth more “contemporary."

American Rhythm and International Latin have similar characteristics and tempos which will cause the two styles to look similar, like Smooth and Standard’s relationship. They also share some of the same dances, like the rumba and cha-cha, but have them performed at different tempos. The most agreed upon distinction between the two styles is a mechanical/technical one. In International Latin, dancers’ knees should generally be straight when a foot is placed on the floor, whereas in American Rhythm, the knee should be bent and straightened as weight is transferred.

Below is a list with each of the categories and the ballroom dances that belong to them.

American Rhythm

Cha-Cha

Rumba

East Coast Swing

Bolero

Mambo

American Smooth

Waltz

Tango

Foxtrot

Viennese Waltz

International Latin

Cha-Cha

Samba

Rumba

Paso Doble

Jive

International Standard

Waltz

Tango

Viennese Waltz

Slow Foxtrot

Quickstep

Club

West Coast Swing

Hustle

Merengue

Salsa

Bachata

Night Club Two-Step

Country 2-Step

Argentine Tango

Within these categories there will be some shared tempos and characteristics amongst the dances, but never two the exact same. For example, you will notice that Cha-Cha and Rumba are in two different categories. Even though they share the same dance name, they are two different dances. The Rumba that is danced in the American Rhythm style, is danced at a much quicker tempo than the International Rumba. Simply put American Rumba is much faster than International Rumba.

I hope this was informative, we would love to hear feedback, leave us a comment and we will do our best to provide information to help!
